Reflection on Editing

Zara spoke about the editing process perfectly on her blog. I think we took some routes which made life a lot more difficult for us in terms of editing, but one mistake we didn't make this time was delaying the process too much. We tried to get too it as soon as possible, but of course, knowing how much potential our video had, we wanted to maximise use of good footage and hard work.
Zara was right in saying that the freedom that came with re-editing our final task was one we didn't expect, but I'm glad we did it. Even I'm surprised by the emotional maturity we were able to achieve in less than a year, looking at our story as more of a narrative than a montage. Our growth as media students is evident that way, moving from the prelimiary/rough cut to the final project. We began with aesthetic priorities and goals, but ended with a solid narrative, asking each other "WHY though?" at every turn to make sure we had a story to tell with every shot. There needed to be a purpose - everyone can make good video montages, but not everyone can create a visual story. That's the difference between media and non-media students, one I'm glad I can not only see, but be able to be on the more knowledgable side of.
So, editing was more of a treat rather than a challenge. We knew what looked good and what didn't, what we wanted and what we didn't, so watching it come to life with every new shot or every small cut was an absolute pleasure.
